WHY SHOULD MATH IMAGES BE USED IN EVERY CLASSROOM?

Amber Williams

Math Images are everything! I don't know who the person is who decided to use Math images in the classroom, but I love them and I thank them! Whoever this genius is, he or she thought of this years ago and that's when I believe they should have been in EVERY.SINGLE.CLASSROOM. I started using Math Images heavily this academic year (2018-2019) and from here on out they will always be a part of my instruction.

The first time I used Math Images in my classroom, I displayed the image and asked the students how many (of whatever object it was) are there? My students all quickly used their preferred strategy to find out how many. They quickly put their hand up to let me know they had found the answer. After that we discussed the different ways that they all used to solve. It was a great conversation that sparked discourse among my students.

THEN, I WENT MATH IMAGES CRAZY!

I was in everyone's store, in all the things at my house, and outside taking pictures. I knew I would forever be using Math Images, so I wanted to make sure I had a great collection to use. I can see Math in literally anything now and my picture-taking spree is what I contribute that skill to.

It was very hard to only choose three reasons why I believe Math Images should be in every K-12 classroom, but I did...and they are listed below. 😀

THE TOP THREE REASONS WHY I LOVE MATH IMAGES!

1. Math Images are the next best thing to the real thing. Connections to the real world are a must. Children should relate Math to their real life. Using Math Images help students make a connection between things in real life and Math skills.

2. Math Images can be used to build understanding of specific Math skills. There are many standard-specific skills that I have used Math Images for to help deepen my students conceptual understanding of the skill.

3. One Math Image can generate tons of questions and can be used to make high-quality tasks. Math Images can vary. Some images are great for subitizing. Some images serve as a great real-world visual to help with understanding in problem solving. The possibilities are truly endless with Math Images.

If you start using it consistently, I guarantee you will see great improvement in your children!
