THINGS MLK, JR. SAID:
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a powerful, loving, intelligent leader. I decided I wanted to post about some of my favorite quotes from him on this MLK holiday. He has so many wise words, but I ended up choosing these five below
1. "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."
It's so easy to try to plan out the whole goal from beginning to end, step-by-step. So many times we end up becoming stagnant because we don't ever start towards our goal, because we are not sure about every little step. Don't get me wrong! Plans are great. However, the time will never be the perfect time. We have to have enough faith to begin, trust the process, and enjoy the journey.
2. "If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."
We have to remember to do what we can! Change does not happen overnight. When we are trying to improve, reach a goal, or anything; we need to remember that it might not be easy. We can always do something to make ourselves and the world better. There is no good action towards improvement that is too small. The main thing is to keep moving forward.
3. "There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right."
So easier said than done and unfortunately, so rare these days. One of the greatest feelings I experience is doing what I know is right...even if I have to do it alone. It's so hard to stay true to yourself and stand behind your morals and values in a world where it seems difficult to do so. At the end of the day, we need jobs, relationships, money, etc. Sometimes these things may require us to compromise who we really are in order to keep them. We have to always trust that if we do the right thing, it'll all work out. Nothing is worth us doing the wrong thing. If it requires us to do something wrong or compromise ourselves, then it's not meant for us anyway.
4. "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
To hang onto the coattail of #3, here's #4. There's no way around standing up for what we believe in. Even if we are standing alone at first. We have to let our passion shine through and not remain silent about things that we truly feel is a problem. In addition to not being silent, we have to also let our actions reflect what we feel.
5. "Let no man pull you so low as to hate him."
We can not control what happens to us, but we can control how we react to it. We must remember to always have a loving spirit. Everyone isn't for us to be friends with or even be around. However, we should love and care for all people to the best of our ability. Spread love everyday to everyone.
These are just five of my favorite phrases from this impactful man. Feel free to comment and share some of yours!
